Abstract

Cardiovascular disease is substantially increased in diabetes mellitus and is the chief cause of death.1 It is significantly exacerbated by tobacco smoking. Ideally, no diabetic should smoke. Currently, smoking prevalence among the general population in Ireland is 31%.2 Objective To determine the prevalence of tobacco smoking among diabetic patients in a nationally representative sample in the Mid-West region of Ireland.
