Abstract

Additive manufacturing (AM) broadly known as three-dimensional (3D) printing has been defined by different methods of fabricating in a layer-by-layer manner resulting in complex 3D components. AM processes have progressed rapidly since emerging for commercial use in terms of printing capabilities, speeds, and resolution. AM technology has changed how we design and produce products with unparalleled flexibility and performance. However, a major drawback of AM polymer processes is poor surface quality and inadequate mechanical properties of parts directly after printing, resulting in the need for post-processing. Post-processing is a group of techniques used to help unfinished AM parts to reach peak mechanical properties and desirable surface roughness. This chapter intends to document the main considerations for post-processing and steps for 3D printing of biopolymers.
