Abstract

The tourism, economic and social potential derived from events to destinations that host them can be immense. However, it has been critically questioned if the positive outcomes of events really do outweigh the negative impacts produced by event activities. The potentially harmful and damaging social and environmental impacts generated by events and its activities have become a grave cause for concern for event management organisations and policy makers. However, local authorities play an important statutory role when it comes to overseeing all aspects of events, and must work with communities to ensure that events are socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable. This chapter presents insights from Ireland on Local Authority Planning, Sustainability, and Event Governance. A quantitative content analysis approach involving a complete population sample of Local Authorities in the Republic of Ireland was adopted to determine where environmental sustainability fits within the local government agenda for event management planning in Ireland. Critical shortcomings were revealed when it comes to planning and managing events locally highlighting the need for an evidence-informed approach to planning for events. This can help to ensure that positive event impacts are maximized and sustainable event futures are secured.
