Development of a polyvinyl alcohol cryogel for use as a drug delivery device

Abstract

The hydrogels showed overall enhanced swelling and improved mechanical properties. This contrast in characteristics is not reported in the literature and is important for applications such as drug delivery devices or coatings for biomedical devices. Such materials should be interesting for a variety of biomedical applications including the production of novel drug delivery systems and soft haemocompatible tissue applications. Importantly, the results suggest that a versatile synthetic platform has been established that may provide different functional polymers or a combination of such.
