Abstract
Domestic hazard waste can be considered a hidden challenge to the environment. Domestic hazard waste can include home cleaning products, batteries, medicines, insecticides and herbicides, self-care products, and home maintenance products. Unfortunately, many of these products are unregulated in relation to domestic use. This poster based on a published book chapter, highlights materials that can give rise to potential hazard wastes. The receptors after the use of domestic hazard waste and the effects the wastes can have on the environment and human health will be discussed. The present disposal options and treatments will be outlined and gaps in knowledge surrounding regulation and treatment will be stated. A reflection on the role of environmental engineers in hazard waste management will be highlighted.. The outcome of this poster will create awareness about domestic hazard waste and inform stakeholders on the need for more regulation and management of domestic hazard wastes.
