Personal profile

Personal profile

Dr Niall Burke is a lecturer and programme coordinator at the Technological University of the Shannon, specialising in energy systems, thermodynamics, electricity markets, and renewable integration. His research spans heat-pump characterisation, geothermal and solar systems, building energy performance, and the role of flexible electrical demand in supporting high-renewables grids.

His current work focuses on Irish energy policy, grid-scale integration of surplus renewable electricity, and the application of Bitcoin mining as a flexible, market-driven load to reduce curtailment and improve system efficiency. Parallel interests include long-duration energy storage, thermal systems, micro-district heating, and energy-intensive digital infrastructure.

Niall completed his PhD on ground- and air-source heat pump performance in maritime climates, supported by the Irish Research Council. He has hands-on industrial experience installing solar thermal and PV systems, small-scale wind, and heat-pump technologies, as well as providing energy management consultancy.

He is a founding member of Bitcoin Network Ireland, supporting national engagement at the intersection of engineering, markets, and digital energy systems. His publications are available via ORCID: https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0043-7248.
