Organisation profile

The Civil Engineering Research Group (CERG) sits within the Department of Built Environment of TUS and was formed in 2021.

To aim of the group is to provide identity, focus and collectively for research work undertaken in the department, in the field of Civil Engineering (and all its sub-disciplines), and to provide a platform to build and grow this research activity and capability.

Current and recent areas of research include;

  • Use of recycled materials in construction
  • Spatial structures
  • Design for deconstruction (DfD)
  • Sustainable alternatives to herbicide use for management of roadside vegetation
  • Improving connectivity in Irish rivers by removal of man-made barriers
  • Stress ribbon bridges
  • Civil Engineers vs Climate Change

Sustainable Development

Civil engineering and construction are significant contributors to global carbon emissions. The work of CERG helps to tackle climate change by conducting and publishing research on practices and technologies that can help reduce these emissions. In particular our work contributes to the achievement of the following UN Sustainable Development Goals;

  • SDG 6:   Clean Water and Sanitation
  • SDG 9:   Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • SDG 13: Climate Action
  • SDG 14: Life Below Water

UN Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. Our work contributes towards the following SDG(s):

  • SDG 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation
  • SDG 9 - Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
  • SDG 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • SDG 13 - Climate Action
  • SDG 14 - Life Below Water
